Progress
Environmental aspects have been an inherent part of product development at KÄRCHER for years. The aim is to make each new generation of KÄRCHER machines more effective and environmentally friendlier than the last. KÄRCHER does not rely totally on its own know-how in this area; cooperation with the Technical University of Darmstadt ensures that the latest findings in scientific research are implemented at KÄRCHER.

Some of the current projects in product research and development are:

Reducing wastewater contamination
KÄRCHER cleaning agents are solvent-free, highly concentrated, bio-degradable and partly made of renewable materials. Nevertheless, at present we are examining possibilities to influence their impact on the quality of wastewater.

Fuel cell
KÄRCHER sets a high value on innovation - also in the field of environmental protection. In not very far future alternatives to customary sources of energy will be needed. At KÄRCHER we are currently investigating the possibility of using fuel cells in scrubber driers. A pilot product exists and is tested at one of our German factories.

Extending product life
We are looking into more extensive use of exchange parts in repair workshops. For years valuable used parts such as printed circuit boards have been used in our service center in Gissigheim, Germany.

Life cycle analyses
Life cycle analyses (LCA) are performed in order to evaluate the environmental impact of a product over its whole useful life. The importance of these studies is growing from a political point of view and also because of commercial interests. The main aim of these analyses is to find potential areas of improvements vis-à-vis the environment. At KÄRCHER, limited life cycle analyses have been carried out for high-pressure cleaners and steam cleaners in collaboration with the Technical University of Darmstadt. At the present time the data of all KÄRCHER products are being collected in a central database in order to simplify such analyses in future and improve their implementation.
