World Rally: Ford takes win in Jordan
(bke) Mikko Hirvonen claimed his first victory of the World Rally Championship 2008 in Jordan. Therewith BP Ford Abu Dhabi World Rally Team leads in the drivers’ and manufacturers’ standing. Dani Sordo (Citroen) finished second, followed by Chris Atkinson (Subaru), whereas Sébastien Loeb (Citroen) came in tenth.
As Hirvonen’s strategy paid off, his team mate’s victory hopes ended after he had hitted a rock and suffered a broken rear left suspension. The crew worked feverishly to bind the suspension together sufficiently for the next stage and enabled Jari-Matti Latvala to climb to seventh position in the end.

Jordan’s debut in the WRC marked the first Arab rally to appear in the series since 1976. Blistering temperatures just below 40 °C made the fifth round of the series 2008 a punishing event for man and machine. The route on the shores of the Dead Sea took course along the earth’s lowest land point at more than 400 metres below sea level.

The next rally will take place from 16. to 18. May in Sardinia.
